Health
Hamster are very healthy and never usually have colds or health problems although when they do become prone to diesease their health can deteriate quickly. Classic sighns of health problems are hamsters droppings. If you find there arn't none then the hamster may have constepation but if the droppings are very soggy and wet, then it may have diarrah. In any of these cases contact your vet immediatly. If your hamster seems to have a very runny nose and is sneezing alot it probably has a cold. A good cure for that is cod liver oil. Break open a capsule and slip some of it into the hamster water bottle or dish and the hamster will drink it without noticing. If you put the cod liver oil in the water but the hamster doesn't seem to be drinking it then put some squash into the water. e.g orange.
If you think that your hamster is ill and it has symptoms which aren't mentioned here, then you should take it to the vet to be checked out. |
TIP:if you need to take your hamster to the vet, go to a pet shop and pick up one of the handy boxes above, they are great.more information is on the cage section
If you think your hamster isn't getting as much vitamins as it needs, or if it doesn't seem to be eating much, then go to your local pet shop and buy some vitamins to put into its drinking water. It should make your hamster well again in no time!

Long toenails?
Hamsters will rarely need their toes clipping, but if the hamster seems to be scrathing itself while clipping or its toenails are curling over, then you should try to clip them. My advice would be to go to the vet to get them cliped but if you are confident in your self then you could do it your self. get one person to hold the hamster still and one to cut them. But be sure not to cut them down too far or they will start bleeding and will cause your hamster pain. |

!Another useful tip!
To keep your hamsters nails smooth and small, then why don't you try lining a shoebox with sandpaper and let your hamster to run around in it each night for a few miniutes. REMEMBERDon't line the bottom of the cage with sandpaper as it will be uncomfortable for your hamster and it may harm itself. |
Grooming
Hamsters do not need grooming but if its hair is scraggily then you can groom with a brush from a pet shop or a soft toothbrush. Hamsters wash themselves reguraly and are particulary clean animals. Sand baths are very good for them though. Just get a container like a food dish and put in some chinchilla dust or fine sand and the hamster will roll about in it to get the greasiness out of its fur. In the wild hamsters live in the dessert and will be used to it.
FLEAS
If your hamster itches alot it may have fleas. TO treat this, get some special flea powder for hamsters or use a mild kitten flea powder.
